After becoming a youth basketball photographer almost overnight, I spent six years building relationships inside the game that gave me access to the rooms parents don’t get to enter. Locker rooms. Closed practices. Behind the bench. From that close, I began to see how the same toughness that makes kids great athletes can follow them home. As someone who nearly lost my life at 12 because my pain was mistaken for weakness, and later became a mother whose son trusted me with pain no one else could see, I know what can happen when we miss what a child is trying to tell us.
What Comes Home was written to help parents recognize what the game may be teaching their child to carry, and know how to make home the place they can finally set it down.
